John Cena Apologizes for Calling Taiwan a Country After His Film Made $137 Million in China

Actor and professional wrestler John Cena apologized for referring to Taiwan as a country after his film grossed record sales in China over the weekend.

Cena, who is promoting the release of his movie Fast & Furious 9, faced uproar from Chinese audiences after he told a Taiwanese broadcaster that Taiwan was "the first country that can watch" the film. After the movie opened in China this weekend—earning $137 million, a record for China since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic—Cena posted a video on Tuesday to the Chinese social media website Weibo apologizing for his "mistake" of calling Taiwan a country.

"I made one mistake," Cena said in Mandarin. "I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologise, I apologise, I’m very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people."

Taiwan has maintained political independence from China since 1949 and is led by a pro-American, democratic, and anti-communist government. China maintains that Taiwan is a sovereign territory of China, and Chinese president Xi Jinping has pledged his ambition to retake Taiwan. U.S. military leaders have warned an invasion of the country by China could occur within the next six years.

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) blasted Cena for joining the growing list of celebrities who "sell their souls" to China.

"Cena, like Lebron, bends the knee to Xi. Yet another example of how many of the people who engineer our popular culture, often while lecturing us about how evil America is, are the first to sell their souls to the Chinese Communist Party," Gallagher said.

“The chinese people are as evil as their gov’t. Anyone who skins dogs alive and eats them are wicked.”

I really hope you are being sarcastic.

A culture that designates different animals as food vs. pet than you do - you call them wicked?

A cow, or pig, is ok to skin and eat, but not a dog?

You are a fool.

We do not skin alive our animals because the adrenaline supposedly makes the meat taste better.
I saw a video a few years back of thousands of dogs strung up and litetally skinned alive. I wished I never did I cannot get their painful howls out of my mind.

You are either a fool or a chinese trying to persuade opinion on evil china.

The copuntry is evil inlcuding it’s people. The chinese people spy and steal out technology with abandon.

Spot on. Thank you.

Anyone who finds nothing wrong with skinning a poor dog alive isn’t a human being. They are subhuman monsters and should be shunned and canceled by civilized society.

Dogs are loyal, loving and precious. Much more loyal and loving than most humans.

I agree - skinning an animal alive is awful. I didn’t know about that.

But I threw lobsters into boiling water until a few years ago - I just never really thought about it - or I foolishly believed they feel no pain.

I try not to think about how animals that I eat are slaughtered. I know it’s not always done with compassion.

The conscience is a strange thing - it kicks in selectively - but once it kicks in, you can’t think about things the same way after that.

I still feel ok about killing rodents and insects just because they annoy me...
but maybe some day I’ll change my mind about that - who knows.

But I still say that it is wrong to say an entire race or nationality is evil - the culture might be dominated by evil tyrants.

I think the Chinese people left in freedom to self-govern would make mistakes just like you and me, but I believe that eventually their consciences would kick in just like you and me, and they would distance themselves from cruel practices.

I hope that in our culture the practice of abortion will eventually be seen as cruelty.
