Severe gales and freezing hail and rain are said to have hit the high-altitude stage as runners climbed 6,500 feet above sea level wearing just shorts and t-shirts at around 1pm.

"The wind is too strong – our thermal blankets have been torn to bits," a runner wrote in the group messages, according to Reuters. "A few are unconscious and are foaming at the mouth," another posted.

Les Stroud used to do episodes on this type of thing with lost hikers, etc. He would go out to recreate it, along with having some simple extra items to see how that would have helped the people.

I think his first comment on this would be “Check the weather forecast before you plan on running in the mountains in your shorts!”

lack of aid stations. I suppose the participants didn’t look into what the aid station situation was going to be on this race. It makes a HUGE difference to a race and the condition/health of the participants.

Bad water ultra marathon *100+ miles) is run through death valley in July.

To date they have never lost a participant during a race.

Most USA ultras’ have this distinctive quality, even the small , almost informal ultra. Temperature swing of 50+ degrees F are not uncommon, as many are run through mountains and valleys, day and night.
