Is it possible we are seeing something else there, like a splinter group from Masonry, which Masons are unaware of?

Leo Zagami, has explored the ins and outs of the "Illuminati" and has several detailed books covering his discoveries. In Confessions of an Illuminati, Volume I: He says the that world is run by "Ur Lodges" which are not formally masonic, but have some of the attributes. I would recommend looking at his book to see the list of Ur Lodges that he details.
