That’s true. But hopefully that was a one off.
Many years ago, after buying my first house, the electric company wanted a $500 deposit. One year refundable at an interest rate that was about twice the current bank rate.
I jokingly asked if they’d up it to $1000.
Read the fine print. Anytime your provider has to buy power and you’re beyond the grace period, you pay market price.

After the power outage and shortage this year a lot of our friends got some very high bills because their provider was stuck with extreme energy cost. We weren’t charge any such fee....it matters who you choose a s your provider!!!

No choice. That WAS the sole provider in Boulder County (the City of Longmont had their own cooperative, but didn’t serve my address.
Took those asswipes 4 months to get my deposit and overpayment back.
I overpaid and had a final balance due of like -$60 plus the $500 deposit.
