How any of the Chinese came out of the Cultural Revolution with even a shred of their sanity is beyond me.
Horrible, Horrible time in China’s History.
Cannibalism itself wouldnt have had any real effect on the national psyche. Its a Chinese story repeated over and over again. During the wars of times past men from the whole of the rural areas were conscripted and killed in battle. With the crops then failed those alive were left to do what was necessary.
Of course this time it seems it was nore ritualized at least by some. While that may have made it more abhorent to part of the population it also may have made it even more acceptable to others and that certainly would have had an effect.
How any of the Chinese came out of the Cultural Revolution with even a shred of their sanity is beyond me.
Horrible, Horrible time in China’s History.

A great first person account of the horrors of the cultural revolution in China is “Life and Death in Shanghai” by Nien Chang. took What the book reveals, beyond the horror, is how many of the followers of the revolution really didn’t believe in it, but just were willing to go along and do whatever they were told if they thought they were on the “winning” side. It shows how the majority of people are without any core values or beliefs.
