A woman in Indiana inspired her community this week with a kind gesture to honor her late son.

When Carolyn Mick went to pick up a cake from her local Kroger in Plainfield, Indiana, she discovered someone had already paid for it. The cake also came with a note, signed by "Toni, Tyler’s mom."

In the note, Toni explained that her son had died five years ago and she wanted to honor his memory by buying Mick’s cake.

"Today is my son’s 35th birthday, his 5th one in Heaven," Toni wrote in the note, which was posted online. "In his memory I’ve paid for your cake. Please enjoy, make special memories and hug your children and loved ones tight. My son loved cake!"

Mick posted a picture of the note in a local Facebook group and said she was moved to tears by Toni’s kindness and message.

"Dear Toni.. you know who you are and I want to express how moved I am," Mick wrote. "This means so much that my husband and I cried together. With the turmoil of things going on it reminds us of what really matters LIFE!"

Many commenters on the post were also moved and inspired by Toni’s gesture.

That was a great thing she did.

Without any further background, I think it’s weird and kinda creepy, but I’m an old crab who values my privacy. Seems intrusive if a stranger.

I’ve shopped at that Kroger before, when I first moved to Indiana 8 years ago. I think this is a kind gesture even if an unusual one. People deal with their grief in different ways, and this is at least a positive way of handling grief.

On this happy day in your life remember to think of my dead son that you have no connection too.

Yeah. If you have to, just pay for the cake without all the explanation.

Sounds like the sequel to “A Small, Good Thing”

It is creepy. I wouldn’t bring that cake home. It invasive and bad juju.

The grieving mother should have done something else in his memory.

Weird and creepy?
Not really. Let me tell you about weird and creepy....

Two years ago I had need of temporary storage so I went to a local storage company and rented a bay from them.
One one of my trips taking my stuff I noticed a bay open and a woman moving around in the not filled bay.
As I was leaving I stopped at the office I noticed the lady just closing the bay. I asked the woman in the office about the lady and the nearly empty storage bay.
She explained that the ladies son had died seventeen years prior. Instead of getting rid of anything the lady rented the storage space, set it up inside EXACTLY the way her son’s room had been set up and went by twice a week to keep everything dusted and cleaned. She even went as far as changing the bedspreads with the seasons.
As far as I know that lady is still maintaining her dead sons “room” exactly as he left it.
THAT is weird and creepy to me.

When you say it like that, I see the point several of you are making.

I didn’t see it through that prism at first,
