I got a call from “Medicare”. It came up on the phone message system that it was from Medicare. They said they wanted to issue me a new card and told me my address, medical history, medications I'm taking, doctors I have, etc. Then they asked me to verify my Medicare number. I said that if they had all that information perhaps they could read to me my Medicare number and I could verify it for them. They quickly hung up.

What was interesting is the amount of information they can have and how legitimate they sound. These scammers are very sophisticated and I've known some very savvy people who have had their identities stolen.

We had the police come and talk to our Kiwanis Club about this and one of our members still fell for one. The scam is exactly like one described to us and she still went along. They just get caught up in the moment.

I only went along with one of them (son missed a court date) just to find out how I was going to get money to them. He mentioned a PayPal terminal at the Sheriff’s office and I burst out laughing. I bet he lost his chubby when that happened.
