Chicago's rat problem is so bad that they released 1,000 feral cats in the city to hunt them

Chicago has a lot of great things to offer. It's super windy, freezing in the winter, scorching in the summer, the homicide rate is off the charts, and there are legions of rats roaming the streets.

At least the deep-dish pizza is good!

To solve the rat issue, Chicago has decided to release a ninja-army of 1,000 feral cats:

Yep, Chicago was named "rattiest city" by pest-control group Orkin for the sixth year in a row.

Feral Chihuahuas would be a better solution. Plus they would chase people in packs.

Wait. it is cold Chicago, they should try ferrets.

At least if it happened again we’d know what the problem is. I can’t imagine being alive in 1349-1351 and watching people dying all around you, and not knowing how to stop it.

This will not work. Feral cats kill few rats:

Crazy Cat Lady Syndrome
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_lady#Toxoplasma_gondii

Toxoplasma gondii

Some studies indicate a link between the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which sexually reproduces exclusively in cats, and numerous psychiatric conditions, including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia,[13][14] whereas other studies have showed that T. gondii is not a causative factor in later psychoses.[15][16]

The compulsive hoarding of cats, a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), has long been associated with “crazy cat ladies”.[17] Mass media has drawn on this stereotype to coin the term crazy cat lady syndrome to refer to the association between T. gondii and psychiatric conditions.[13]

I’m not sure a feral cat will tangle with a full grown Norwegian rat. They probably ought to bring in packs of coyotes. And maybe some hawks.

I’m also thinking there are a lot more rats than 1000. More than enough to take care of the cats.

“Cats don’t normally eat large rats. Little rats and mice yes, large rats—not so much.”

the science panels that the government pays for are paid to conclude that they will. woe be the individual who denies science

They could clean up the city and deny the rats a food source.

The government wonks should have invested in a pack of Jack Russell Terriers. Fearless canines, and excellent rat hunters.

Cats can’t really take on rats, that’s my understanding.

I have a little female barn cat that brings home fresh-slain Norway rats and tree rats all the time. She is obsessed with catching big rats. But if she were turned loose in Chicago, she’d move out of the city and even the state as soon as possible, like everyone else, because there’s probably a tax on rat posession and a hundred anti-claw laws intended to disarm her.
