Thank you for this. I’ve loved the Euyrthmics since forever.
And I imagine the royalties still flow. Sweet dreams are truly made of that. 🎶$
Remember being fascinated with the fact that the vocal harmony, when it finally kicks in, is higher in tone than than the melody, rather than lower. This is probably totally common in all kinds of music for many, many years, before and since. But for some reason, such an arrangement of notes sounded unique to these ears when young. The fact that the interval between the melody and the harmony was a minor third (?—not a music theory guy but I think this is right), and therefore had sort of a Halloweeny sound associated with it probably also added a lot of interest.
I remember my sister and I being fascinated by this song in many ways.
The album this was on was one of the first CDs I bought. Completely entrancing!
Let’s not forget the associated video, which added a complete other depth to it all. Annie Lennox is a very striking woman, and the video was different (in a good way) in an age when different was quickly becoming common. It cemented an image of the 80s MTV wave in millions of young kid’s minds forever.
I could swear the Eurythmics charted something before Sweet Dreams.I remember Sweet Dreams as a follow up song...but to what I don’t know!
“Annie Lennox is a very striking woman”
The first picture I saw of her was a face shot on the cover of a magazine.
I mistook her for David Bowie!
She did some strange stuff with the makeup.
But the music was great.
To each his own I guess. Would rather have my toenails peeled off with a sander, than hear this song.
I watched an interview in which Lennox sang Sweet Dreams acapella. Her voice is incredible! And she’s quite the looker as well!
Not my fave either.
Youtube HD video lists 570 million views of Sweet Dreams Are Made of This. Inpressive...
Smooth Operater ?
[YouTube link] Thanks - brought back memories.
I was doing my daily commute from Oceanside, CA to Anaheim when I first heard the song. Striking. At first I thought it was some kind of lamentation. Stayed in my mind the entire trip - and for weeks afterward. Saw the video and thought it completely off the wall - and therefore great.
Quite a duo.
bump
sweet dreams was a bad song, made worse by them playing it all the time.
I really liked Love is a dangerous drug, but it was played maybe 1% as much.
Sometimes they play a bands worst song over and over, and never give you the good one. It’s like how they always play “money” by pink floyd, when that was one of their worst songs and definitely the worst on the album
Interesting. I have 3 versions of that song. The original, a radio cut that is a minute shorter, a Marilyn Manson cover. The Manson cover couldn’t be more different than the original. Strangely enough, I like both.
“. . . so we decided, while in New South Wales (in Wagga Wagga of all places, Aborigine for “place of many crows”), to be a duo.”
So at least we know why all the bloody cows are in the video!
That’s Sade.
I was looking to see if Manson was remarked on.
