I play 42, dominoes, every week at a senior citizens’ center with a bunch of 70 and 80 year old folks, all of them are more tightly wrapped than this clown is.
I had a friend that spent his last few weeks in a senior center.
I go up and visit him for a hour or so a few times each week. Many
of the folks that were able to get about would be up walking the
halls or gathered in the waiting room up front chatting. My wife
gets magazines delivery here at home and they stack up. I took
a bunch of them up there they had a blast with new material.
Different scenario.
This is not a nursing home, place they live or whatever.
It’s the local county supported location where they provide lunches for anyone who wants to go, for about 2 bucks I think, maybe free, they also have excercise classes in the mornings, sit in your chair stuff since many are limited to walkers, and I don’t know many people 80 years old who can do jumping jacks...the building is also where you apply for low income housing, which is the surrounding neighborhood and mostly older folks, and we play dominoes twice a week, they also have a jigsaw puzzle usually in progress. The building also has 3 or 4 book racks full of books, I haven’t asked, but I think it’s grab whatever you want to read.
As far as the low income housing goes, I guess we have it pretty good, mostly I see older people, and little or no sign of the crack houses and drug dealers, criminals and basic low lifes some low income housing neighborhoods draw. It’s a nice neighborhood, well kept, no abandoned cars or nonstop boom boxes circling the block...but it’s also a small town, not a big city, and not a lot of big city problems either.
I guess it could be more accurately called a senior activity center...but they just call it the senior citizens’ center. Oh, they also have bulk food giveaways now and then for people who need it. Similar to commodities. I got one a while back and split it with a neighbor 84 years old. Milk, frozen cut up chicken, some veggies, chicken nuggets (those were good) and a few other things.
We just started to get together again a couple of weeks ago after a year of being shut in with mostly no dominoes, everyone is enjoying it.
