When my sister died in 2011, she was leasing a car from Honda. She leased the car, specifically telling the dealer that she had completed chemo and radiation treatments, that she was in remission, but that the cancer could come back at any time...would there be a problem if she had to turn the car back in? The dealer of course told her there was no problem, but when she was in hospice care, I contacted Honda, told them the circumstances, and asked them to send someone to pick the vehicle up. The lady gave me a hard time, telling me that I'd be responsible for return fees, and the uncompleted lease, and I told her: "Honey, my name isn't on anything connected to that car, so you can try your threats on someone else."

They dragged their heels about picking up the car. My sister, a few weeks before she lapsed into a coma told me to stop making any payments on the car. She was pissed they'd given me such a hard time. The last time I talked to Honda, I told them that I lived in another part of the State, and that I had to have her apartment cleared by the end of August when her leased expired, (She died on her birthday, Sept. 2nd), and that if they didn't come to get the car, I was either going to leave it in the parking lot, dump it back at the dealer's where she got it, or just drop it off someplace, and let them find it. They finally came one morning as I was on my way to the hospice house.

Months after she died, they called me about the amount she owed, and I told them they could contact her at Riverside Cemetery on Lake Avenue, in Rochester, New York. They never called back.

I’m sorry about your sister and the grief the dealer gave you. Had they handled this responsibly when you first called them they could have spared themselves a lot of needless effort.
