Nope, the battery is the major cost of the vehicle. It contains a lots of heavy, rare, expensive and dangerous components. According to newest greatest, it cost like $5000 for a gallon of gas equivalent.
You may save couple of hundred bucks a year on fuel. It will never pay back the purchase price difference.

They don’t really. Most of it is lithium, which is expensive now but is one of the most common minerals on earth.

Massive lithium projects are underway around the world and the price will fall over the next few years.

In 10 years battery prices have gone from $1100 per kilowatt hour to $120, and are still falling.
