A friend of mine who lives in Russia says during the USSR period when there was a vodka shortage, people would apply shoe polish to a piece of bread. The component ingredients would separate out, and people would eat the alcohol soaked bread.

Might work with early 20th century American liquid shoe shine. The dissolved coloring and gloss components would attach to the starch of baked wheat goods. Bread acts as a filter as the polish is poured through a slice, yielding a stream of mostly the purified solvent (alcohol)—lore passed down from participants of the Great Depression.

The Russians are very creative in times of great need for hooch.
