Why would a sane person go into a crowd like that. It’s been known as a death trap for years.

Exactly! I used to have a 40ish, overweight, out of shape employee that loved to wade into that kind of insanity. HE invariably got damaged almost every time.

"Meron Stampede"
We have many country music events in Texas called Stampedes.
They are not known for fatalities.

Trampling might be a better term.
The notable one in the rock’n’roll music world was at The Who concert in Cincinnati many years ago.

I’m not Jewish but I know that. Seems to me the govt afraid to piss off the ultra orthodox with controls since they obviously can’t control themselves.

I watched a few videos of this and past festivals and those guys (they separate sexes) get very worked-up. Like the World Cup Final worked-up.
Its not hard for me to recognize the challenge for any govt trying to placate a group that gets so...agitated.

More non-religious Israelis attending every year, and more alcohol consumption every year. Note to mention things like lumber theft around the country.

Lumber has gotten very expensive. But what’s that have to do with this thread?

LaG B’Omer celebrants have been known to steal building site lumber to make bonfires.

It’s religious fervor. Perhaps you’ve seen something similar at tent meetings? The police made a major mistake in crowd direction, and it resulted in a stampede of people in a state of religious fervor. Very unfortunate.

No tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar (basic text of mysticism) in Monsey or Monroe. It does happen at times in Walmarts on Black Friday.

Nope never been to a tent meeting. I avoid crowds. Claustrophobia.

So do I, mostly, and I also don’t like traveling far from home, so I didn’t go.. But this is like a tent meeting, and normally reticent people dance and sing wildly around a bonfire on this holiday, the anniversary of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s death, which is festive, like St. Patrick’s Day is festive to the Irish.
