He was listening to the respective tones of each numeral.

Much like the tones of a landline phone...my guess.

I was going to suggest the same thing. His Morse Code experience would have sharpened his ability to discern tones.

keypads emit the same tone on all keys, even on pin keys at the store for purchases. If they emit any at all. So he was obviously doing it another way. Lag between farther keys from closer keys maybe? One number key being a double tap same number?
