What about AB negative? I know nothing about blood types but I was told years ago mine is most uncommon in the US which when I look it up is AB-. What’s the diff bewteen AB + and AB-?
***What’s the diff between AB + and AB-?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rhesus (Rh) factor is an inherited protein found on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood has the protein, you’re Rh positive. If your blood lacks the protein, you’re Rh negative.
Cheer up though, at least you aren’t AB normal..... 😂
AB- is the only type rarer than AB+. The positive and negative refer to RH factor. I’m AB+ (positive). Negative in any blood type is rarer than positive, but since AB anything is only 4% in the US, both versions are the rarest ones.
I tested my own blood years, ago in school science class. Years later it was confirmed correct, when I donated blood. Which even later they would not let me do, since I had spent time in Europe in the ‘80s. Mad cow, you know. Never mind that I didn’t eat beef while there...
The Rhogam factor is the difference. I remember asking about that in college biology and the professor could offer no definitive explanation.
I am A-; husband is AB-. One obstetrician told me that I needed the rhogam shot during pregnancy. When I told him I did not, his response was “well, I do not know who is the father of your child.”
Just imagine my reply to him...
