If there really is a more lethal variant, I would not be surprised if it wasn’t purposely released by China on their historic enemy neighbor.
I’ve learned over the last year that most people can’t do simple mathematical comparisons like that.
Setting aside what the meaningless term “cases” might actually mean, do a couple of searches:
First, ask a search engine how many cases of COVID-19 are there in India?
Second, ask what the population of India is.
Then do the math. Today or yesterday there were about 350,000 new cases in India, a country with a population of 1.37 billion people. That single day new cases total is 0.025 % of the population.
I will be told that it’s more meaningful to examine the cumulative totals of cases. 17 million cases going back a year, which cumulatively is 1.24% of the population.
But neither of these tiny percents is meaningful, because the term “cases” is meaningless to begin with. It’s like asking how many cases of flu there are, compared, say, to how many people are dying BECAUSE OF the flu and the flu alone.

I will not be concerned until there is a septuple mutant COVID virus. Even then all I have to do is layer another mask on my face. If you have a quadruple COVID mutant then you need to wear a layer of 4 masks, if you have a quintuple mutant you wear 5 masks. Simple. /sarc

I don’t believe it has been established whether the current vaccines are effective against all variants. So it very well might be useless against the stronger strain that this doctor believes is emerging in India.
I am leaning towards that as well.

It appears that the New York Post is using pictures from a gas plant leak 11 months ago, with people lying in the streets of India, purporting to show this as the current situation in India due to a COVID outbreak. The media et al are trying to use India to ratchet up the “fear” in other countries - fear porn/propaganda ... it’s all they do anymore.

Do you suppose Bid*n would ever block flights to the U.S. from India to reduce spread of the strain? When Trump did this with China, they all cried he was xenophobic.
It might be pointless anyway since most flights make connections elsewhere outside India before continuing to the U.S. The TSA would have to screen for Indian passports which would be labeled “racial profiling”.
India is a natural competitor to China. I really wonder if this new outbreak is not gain if function new strain seeded by China.
