'As a constitutional matter, however, the Justice Department under both Democratic and Republican administrations has consistently agreed that statehood for the District requires a constitutional amendment; it cannot be done by mere majority vote in Congress.' ...heritage.org
"The District constituting the seat of Government of the United States shall appoint in such manner as Congress may direct: A number of electors of President and Vice President equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives in Congress to which the District would be entitled if it were a State"
Are Joe Biden, Jill Biden, Kamala Harris, and Douglas Emhoff really going to be given three electors in the next election?
I just read an article about the roadblocks of making D.C. a state. There are several problems with the biggest road block being the 23rd amendment. Several administration’s including Bush felt it could not be done. Problem is the rule of law will not stop the democrats or John roberts.
Like the Constitution matters anymore.
And Congress can easily redefine the Capitol District as the White House an Capitol building only and make a state out of what's left.
It's worthy of your time and thoughtful consideration. Cheers!
The state of Maryland would have to act in that regard although some argue Maryland already gave up their authority to do so.
Not going to happen.
Maryland has no say in the matter. They gave that up when they gave the land for D.C. to begin with.
Never going to happen
Never say never.
In that case, the color white will be eliminated.
Why do you think they are on their deathbed. Who, outside of Trump, is the opposition?
Explain West Virginia then?
I think they are just planning to call the tiny collection of fed buildings the capital. Everything else then becomes the new state “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” or something. Is there any minimum size requirement as to what can be considered the capital?
I wonder if the president’s family would be the only residents who get the new tiny capital’s electoral college votes.
Freegards
Is this even Constitutional? Also where are they going to put the state buildings and can you imagine the tax rates to support this mess.If they have to locate state offices in another state, how does that work?
The House does all kinds of nutty things. That’s why we have the Senate.
Who, outside of Trump, is the opposition?
The same people that were with him the first time plus a bonus round of the independents and disappointed democrats the democrats are in for a thrashing in 2022 and 2024.
The damage they have already done and with an unlimited amount coming down the pike.
Their party has been the death for a while it’s why they are grasping for all the power to stay alive futile move.
These “journalists” suck... The “District of Columbia” cannot be made a state. They have carefully drawn a map, and it excludes a few buildings that would not be part of the new state (the “Douglas Commonwealth”). Washington, DC would still be Washington, DC. They’ve only got to “fool” 5 Supreme Court Justices to make it official. And then the country’s tiniest, least populous state would get 6 electoral college votes. The 3 it has now, plus the 3 for being a state.
I predict a much harder sell in the Senate.
“It mandates the maximum size but does not specify a minimum size. Congress can carve out the White House, Capitol, and related office buildings into a new Capitol District and make a state out of the rest.”
The wording that mandates a maximum size does not give Congress the authority to re-size it smaller and make the remainder a state. That is against all common sense and the Founders never dreamed that some fools would seek to grant statehood to a few square miles and make it co-equal in the Senate to Texas or New York, for example.
