I believe it is most effective on CNS-mediated chronic pain, of a type with heavy psychological involvement (”the more you think about it, the worse it gets”, and the pain pathway is primed and sensitized). Much less effective on acute pain like a laceration or breaking a bone. I’m sure the higher doses are more effective — I’ve seen up to 700 mg used in studies — but then you’re getting into the territory of potential liver damage if used repeatedly.

That's the problem with CBD oil. There's definitely something there. It does something to relive pain but there's not a lot of research to quantify that effect or any negative side effects so it has a snake oil reputation. io do think it helps though, there's some kind of anti-inflammatory action there and, as Americans grow older, I think it will be very useful to have another OTC anti inflammatory medication, especially if it's as effective as Motrin and has minimal side effects. The fact is, Motrin kills people every year and we know tylenol has liver toxicity issues too.
