My two year old F-150 company car has 80,000 miles on it. I don’t think I’ve ever used cruise control.

I find myself older now than I’ve ever been in my life, but I have to say I’m impressed with the adaptive cruise control and lane assist features on our Honda CRV. On the Interstate, the car practically does drive itself—but I do keep my hands on the wheel and foot near the brake pedal.

The first time I had the systems on I thought there was something wrong with the car was pulling to the left as the highway curved left. I got used to it slowing down when a car in front was going slower, but I was really surprised when it hit the brakes when the car in front was slowing down. So it does make long journeys less tiresome, but do I trust my life to it? No way.

I don’t mind cruise control (to avoid tickets), and wouldn’t mind lane departure warnings and automatic braking if approaching a vehicle too rapidly. But those latter systems, if off warranty, are horrendously expensive to get repaired — thousands. And your liability insurance might not cover the vehicle until repaired.
