if one is out of debt, how does this system square? we still have some debt, but we've paid so much off....

The principle related to your comment seems to be that when the fundamentals of the system are made right, any seeming injustice with smaller components of the system—as with debt forgiveness—become irrelevant.
Another way to look at it is this: the debt itself, as a function of the unlawful and morally corrupt system, is invalid. To maintain invalid components of a corrupt system is not reasonable.
