Everything I’ve looked at dismisses the ‘natural variant’ theory with one theoretical exception, which I think was centered on the Aztrazeneca/J&J’s . At best I’ve seen research that says the virus can upload (imprint, be transcribed) onto the DNA of the recipient. Also, there was a tweak, gain of function so some say we’re looking at more than one engineered version.
But comments about about variants are mixed, tending to describe loss of function, with perhaps the exception of Vanden Bossche.
