Rene Compean texted a friend Monday that he was lost and that his phone was dying before he went missing in the San Gabriel Mountains

A California man who went missing Monday evening while on a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains has been found.

Rene Compean, 45, was found near the Chilao Campgrounds on Tuesday afternoon, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department told ABC 7 and NBC Los Angeles.

Compean was reportedly airlifted out, was in good condition and will not need to be hospitalized, ABC 7 reported.

The rescue came just hours after the Sheriff's department asked "avid hikers" to help identify the area Compean had been when he sent his friend a photo during his trek on Monday.

He later texted his friend shortly before 6 p.m. saying that he was lost and that his phone was dying, prompting authorities to utilize the photo in the search for Compean. It was not clear if the photo ended up leading to his rescue or not.

Compean had been hiking in the Mount Waterman area of the mountain range, which is northeast of Los Angeles. The photo he texted his friend showed his legs, which were covered in dirt, and a canyon below where he was sitting.

But, if you’re in unfamiliar territory, it can be pretty scary; especially at night.

Off trail can be scary in daylight, at least finding directions. I often find the cell phone is useless, I don't even get coverage at home unless in the open. And GPS a problem with any forest canopy. Just have to pay attention I guess.

That story is a great analogy to what so many of us know how to get out of the woods of socialism, corruption, China bioweapon sickness, media thought manipulation, and much more. No one’s listening to us either.

I was always pretty good at dead reckoning and a Topo map showing major features. I can usually bound myself with landmarks — streams, rivers, escarpments, peaks.

No idea at all, I have always been able to tell if there is a directional change.

When I was about 5 years old my family and I were headed back to my Moms home in Wisconsin from California; we drove east most of the way but one night I was asleep in the back of the car when we turned north, it woke me up and I asked my Mom why we changed direction.

We were on old highway 66 and it kind of wandered around when we hit the mid west, not being old enough yet to read a map I didn’t realize that cross country roads had a tendency to wander around and follow old wagon trail routs and the routs of least resistance.

My Mom asked me how I knew we were headed north and gave me a funny look, I just told her I could feel it.

I’m in my 70’s now and have been that way my entire life.
When I was in the Marine Corps we had to take an over land navigation course; never could figure out how a supposedly trained officer could screw up an over land course when he had a map, a compass, and pretty straight forward land marks.

I really don’t know how or why it works, I have just learned to trust it.

If I was going to be hiking, I would make sure I had a battery or two in my backpack to keep my phone charged.
