Actually, she discovered that all of her pre-conceived notions were wrong. She wanted to be the great White Savior to down-trodden people but instead she was a prop for a get rich quick scheme and the down-trodden people were seeded with expert criminals
Save the Children should have been called %#@* the Children We Need a Cash Cow
In 1980-81 I spent 6+ months flying a helicopter in support of famine relief operations in the Karamoja region of NE Uganda. About 500 people were dying each week. Save the Children Fund had about 35 nurses & support personnel in the region running feeding centers - thatch shelters where corn meal (Posho) was boiled in huge kettles made form half of one of my empty jet fuel drums - washed out, of course.
There were many organizations working together in this effort - local churches from the Church of Uganda, the Catholic Church and various Protestant churches. Numerous Western relief organizations were involved - Save the Children, OXFAM, Christian Aid, GOAL, Medicine Sans Frontiers, World Vision, etc.
Save the Children paid for the helicopter (we charged only for our direct operating costs, about 1/3 commercial rates in East Africa). They told me, “Fly for whomever needs support. We will cover the costs.”
No organization is perfect. But the NGO ground troops get far more “bang for the buck” than the various UN alphabet agencies in their gilded towers in Nairobi & Geneva. And the churches, with minimal personnel and even less money are in there, good times and bad, working to help “keep body & soul together” so that souls may be saved.
Perhaps you should spend 6 months, working with an organization which has your approval, in a “developing country” to learn “how the other half lives”. It would bless you far more than you can imagine.
