They were established as traffic safety, but like most forces, they have moved far beyond that. They have counter terrorism units, drug enforcement units, personal protection units, SWAT teams, armored tactical vehicles and more. I guess you can add “sending messages” for the feds to that list now.
lol...On-line threats cross state borders. The FBI should be the investigating agency.

I would imagine most of all that is traffic related. Drug shipments via highways, standoffs on highways etc.
I think even FEMA and the post office has it's own swat teams now. It's so out of control with these agencies.
