Washington Spirit has opened with four straight on the road and is 2-1-1, good for second place. Can’t complain about that. They’ve been in a rebuilding cycle since losing in the championship game a few years ago. That was a very competitive veteran team that had aged together and all hit the wall together. Torie Huester is the only one left from that era and she amazingly keeps chugging along. For several years now the team has traded veterans for draft picks and aggressively traded up in the draft. They’re a very young, built through the draft team that surprised in 2019 and may be ready to break out as a solid contender for the next few years. There’s also a new majority owner who seems to have deeper pockets and is ready to invest to win.
They’re splitting home games this season between Segra Field in Leesburg and Audi Field on the waterfront two blocks from Nats Park. They share that field with DC United. They drew 17,000 and almost 20,000 fans in their two test games at Audi in 2019. If they can sustain that kind of attendance over seven games this year, they hope to move entirely to Audi next year. That is a fantastic facility in a great location in the DC riverfront neighborhood, which is a newly reclaimed area and now super hot for young adults, which is a core soccer marketing target.
They had been playing at the Soccerplex in Germantown, which was a lovely small stadium and the most kid friendly professional venue imaginable. The stands were full of girls’ youth teams. It only seated 5000 plus a few hundred more if they sold out the seating on the grass area on the hillside on the south end. They were selling that out pretty regularly in 2019 and there was no growth potential, plus you had to drive halfway to Kansas to get there. The question for some years has been how the team could do in a centrally located stadium that wasn’t wildly inconvenient to three quarters of the fan base. We’re about to find out. Audi Field is a great location. It’s now a question of how fast fans will return post-COVID.
Thank You.
KC's Field of Legends can hold 10,3000+ for soccer matches.
