My suspicion is that the immunity conferred by ordinary infection may be stronger than that provided by vaccination. It probably is, but in the frail, at-risk or elderly population the disease amelioration effect of vaccine induced immune response might be the difference between life and death. If you are health, active and normal body weight it's a crap shoot, but if you are old, fat and diabetic, your risk profile is considerably different.

I think for the healthy, a positive outcome is more like a sure thing than a crap shoot.
