Hillary Rodham Clinton is a prime example of this statement. Actually, Coons was first active in the Republican politics of the election, as a high-schooler and early college helping to elect the eminent conservatives Ronald Reagan and Bill Roth. But in college whatever influences he had convinced him to swing over to the Democrat side, and both before and on graduation became deeply involved in "social gospel" effort. He went to Yale Divinity School for studies in ethics, then a law degree from the Yale Law School. In all this and further ventures, it seems obvious that his leftist leanings became more and more ingrained, until now, when one might call him essentially Marxist in the causes and legislative efforts he supports.
As far as I am concerned, and looking at their records, I find it very difficult to believe that whatever "Christianity" they profess, I cannot see that it would be said that The Lord Jesus Christ could claim them as His Own, considering the legislation they stand for.
You could examine the backgrounds of many of the federal-level legislators, and find few that one would be able to point to as exemplary of serving the interests of improving God's estate on earth.
As to outstanding legislators putting Christ above all, you can make up your mind on them. I think there may be some in the Senate, and quite a few in the House, but you don't generally see this as reported to be their prime activity. That was not true a few years ago, AFIK.
