“The cat will sit on the mantle and lick his paws as you die. Then he will eat your eyes.”

And that is well and good, and natural. It is a matter of one’s perspective, I suppose. I do not want an animal friend to sacrifice his or her life for me. What good is having a friend who is needlessly dead?

“Besides, ‘friendship’ is a human construct, unknown in the underworld from whence cats were spawned.”

Ahh, I see the error of your understanding. Cats are noble and magnificent animals created by God, and quite capable of a relationship akin to friendship with a human. You have studied the feline mind with a faulty presupposition, or with a rather lopsided study group. Or maybe there is something they find disagreeable about you? But indeed, many of the friendships I’ve known have actually been initiated not by me, but by the cat, and with no strings attached - only for mutual companionship.

Two separate ancient peoples separated by oceans cannot have spontaneously discovered the same thing, proving the 'rightness' of the so-called 'myth'.

Cats, Messengers from the Underworld?

(excerpts)

Although many believe it was the Egyptians that started the myth of Cats being the Guardians of the Underworld, this is based on a very loose interpretation of their Cat Goddess “Bastet”.

She was Goddess of protection against contagious diseases and evil spirits which is not really the Underworld. Her only tenuous connection in these Egyptian myths was because she was seen for a while as the wife of “Anubis”, (The God of Embalming.), who was considered second in command to Osiris of the Underworld but that is as far as it goes.

*snip*

However for the purpose of this post’s thought we need to perhaps move to Celtic Lore. (These guys were around about 1000-800 BC, time of the Iron Age.). The reason for this is that it was they who believed that cats were guardians of the gates to the Otherworld, guardians of their treasures and also bring to the people the wholeness, as a spiritual link between humans and the universe.

This implies that Cats maybe have the ability to hear those spirits that have passed on to the Otherworld, whilst they stand guard of the gates. (We assume as our protectors to make sure that nothing nasty escape from there to our world?).

As you can see, both the ancient Egyptians AND the ancient Celts knew that cats were connected to the under/other world.

They came unto this knowing independent of each other.

So....it is known.

Also, cats will eat your eyes.
