Bleeding heart Catholics on the court. That is the problem.

Thank goodness Trump's base blindly supported his "originalist" judges for a lifetime tenure on the nation's highest court. The Cruzbots and NeverTrumpers who questioned how AWESOME his judges would be owe the Trump judge cheerleading squad on here an apology! < /sarcasm>

>> Just a theory: I believe that Gorsuch married a woman from a prominent British family (he studied in the UK). In these British circles it is probably still unacceptable to be Catholic because Catholics are those lowly Irishmen. Gorsuch probably wasn’t a strong Catholic so he didn’t object to converting. I think that Justice Gorsuch is intellectually originalist (his defense of capital punishment in one Supreme Court case was brilliant and fully originalist), but he isn’t culturally conservative. <<

>> Thomas and Alito are both Yale Law, and Alito did his undergrad at Princeton, so the problem isn't Ivy League per se. They're Ivy League, but their backgrounds are not establishment/elite. Thomas' youth spent in poverty in Georgia, Catholic seminary, etc. is anything but establishment. Alito's father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was an Italian American. Both were public school teachers in his youth. Roberts & Kavanaugh, on the other hand, were born and raised establishment/elite. They're Catholics but they may as well have been WASP ruling class. Kavanaugh's grandpa was a Yalie, for crying out loud. Kavanaugh and Roberts both attended elite prep schools, and grew up with the mindset of the establishment/elite. <<

Hmmm. Really interesting and insightful comments in post #53 and #96, I'm copying and pasting them here.

Certainly gave me a lot to chew on, and I hadn't considered that angle but think its probably 100% accurate. The problem isn't as clear cut as "Ivy League law school grads", the post above explains the difference between Thomas & Alito's background (non-elitist) compared to Roberts/Kavanaugh (elitist), despite the fact all four of them eventually ended up graduating from the top schools in the country.

Gorsuch's backstory was a major warning sign too, which 95% of FReepers simply ignored at the time Trump nominated him. As I noted, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have more in common with each other (beltway insider Anthony Kennedy clerks and Bush cronies) than their one has with Antonin Scalia.

Lack of regional diversity is a big problem too, Kav was born and raised in DC like Al Gore, he was about as "swamp creature" as it gets. Gorsuch grew up in Maryland because his mommy had a cushy federal job. Roberts, an upper-class New Yorker. All basically "east coast elite", as opposed to nominating a judge from a rural western state (like the guy I would have picked for Scalia's seat, Thomas Rex Lee of Utah)
