Keep this mind: Matt Gaetz has known he could be in some criminal peril since AT LEAST August of last year. That's when his friend was indicted on sex trafficking charges. The alleged criminal activity began as early as 2017.

If you know you're at the business and of federal investigation that has the potential to put you away for 25-years, you too might do whatever you can to build some measure of loyalty in your partisan base. It seems to be sage strategy on Gaetz' part.

Would you rather win a battle (get rid of Gaetz) and lose a war (Dems win a walk over) or lose a battle (keep an apparently imperfect fighter like Gaetz) and win a war (save the country)?
