Easter is, of course, about much more than just bunnies and eggs. And for those of us who have been celebrating the entire season of Lent, it's especially important to remember Good Friday, when Christians around the world commemorate Jesus's greatest sacrifice. Whether you are celebrating with prayers and fasting, with church services, or simply by abstaining from any meat-based meals (whether that means fish, or going full-on vegetarian), it's appropriate to treat the day with solemnity before moving on to celebrate the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

In that spirit, we're here to help you. You can learn a little bit about the history of Good Friday, and how it's been celebrated through the ages. And if you're unsure of what to make, or what is appropriate to cook, we've got a long list of ideas from our site and from around the web. These are our favorite dishes to make and eat on Good Friday—some involve fish or seafood, which has been a classic choice for Christians on Fridays during Lent for hundreds of years. Others are completely meat-free, which is not only a good sacrifice, but also a healthy choice.

But most importantly, these choices are also relatively simple and easy to make. After all, commemorating Good Friday isn't about celebrating. (We'll do that on Easter, when we're decorating, painting eggs, and hiding baskets for the young ones.) It's about remembering, and being thankful.

BMP! Buttermilk and potatoes. Pour a good buttermilk into a bowl, fill a second bowl with mashed potatoes, salt and pepper each to taste. Scoop a bit of potatoes onto your spoon, then dip it into the buttermilk. Mmmm....Enjoy! This is an old Polish Friday dinner. Sometimes people cube and fry the potatoes.

Seafood Tips: be sure to buy from your local commercial fishermen for the freshest fish.

Do not buy from any fish counter or store that has any odor of fish - fresh fish does not have an odor, but rotting fish does.

If the fish store or counter has ice under the fish, then that fish is not only dehydrating but in the first stages of rot. This is generally the store preferred method of display, alone accounting for most of the store dead loss and higher prices to cover that loss.

Ice over fish keeps the fish hydrated and if the ice is green ice (26 degrees or cooler) that will stop rot for several days, provided it is stored overnight in a cooler whose temperature is 26 degrees or cooler.

Frozen fish: buy only if it has been flash frozen on board (cod) the fishing vessel or immediately upon being processed by the fish buyer (halibut).

There are numerous fishermen that sell directly online to the general public - they will pack the fish in iced freezer boxes and fly to your local airport - I do not know if any do over-nite with Fed Ex or the like.

Or, you could take Arby’s up on their 2 fish sandwiches for 6 bucks offer. Personally, I go to Culvers and get the North Atlantic Codfish sandwich with a side of steamed broccoli.

Here is a good fish recipe.

1 lb large shrimp
1/2 lb cod
1/2 lb calamari
3 lb Octopus
4 celery stalks
2 clove minced garlic
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup olive oil
slat, hot red pepper flakes to taste.

Boil octopus for approximately an hour or until tender.
Boil Shrimp, calamari, cod for 6 minutes.

Put fish into bowl, add celery, garlic, salt and pepper, lemon juice and olive oil. Mix well and refrigerate for 2 hours.

It’s a cold seafood salad. Adjust taste as necessary.
