FreeRepublic is a shell of what it once was. I’m not sure if it’s due to an infiltration of conservative pretenders, or just an overall dumbing down of the population. Why anyone who is allegedly on our side would strive to become more like the intolerant left is beyond me. I’m all for using the techniques of the left against them, but using it against conservatives is moronic. It’s sad and pathetic really..
I’ve been around this site for 20 years and watched membership go for various reasons. Election seasons divide people and some leave. Some people love to argue and leave in various ways—or some don’t want to argue and leave anyway. I think places like Twitter and Facebook pulled people away in the early days of those platforms. A few early FReepers with the ability to do so left to set up competing sites. Finally, I get the impression that most FReepers nowadays are older and retired and leave when their number is up.
I wish Free Republic had a way to issue likes and edit posts. But I’ve been to sites with those features, too, and people still go after one another and drive membership away.

There was a purge here about nine years ago. Some were forced to leave, while others left in disgust. I was one of those who left in disgust. This is the first time I have posted here in almost ten years. Free Republic lost a lot of good people then. It is also when the forum lost it’s way, for many of us.
