CHICAGO — The city has seen a “quantum leap” in cases since a month ago — meaning Chicago has to puts reopening plans on pause, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Wednesday.
On March 1, the city was seeing an average of 295 confirmed cases per day. But as of Wednesday, an average of 498 confirmed cases are being reported each day — a 68.8 percent increase since the start of the month. Just since a week ago, daily new cases are up 37 percent.
The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 across Illinois and Chicago’s positivity rate are also rising. Deaths remain low, with an average of four per day in Chicago; but officials have previously said those losses lag behind other figures.
State and city officials have said they’re deeply worried a third surge of COVID-19 is forming. The uptick in resembles what was seen before the second wave in the fall — meaning a third surge could be on the way, they’ve said.
“We have over 400, almost 500 cases on average as of today,” Lightfoot said at a news conference Wednesday. “That’s a quantum leap from where we were even three weeks ago. That is concerning.”
Chicagoans won’t see “anything more significant in the reopening front” until the number of new cases stabilizes and falls, Lightfoot said.

Colorado on the upswing after hitting a 4 month low in the 7 day moving average a couple of weeks ago. Nothing like the last wave, but the 7 day average of new cases is increasing again.

Possibly but statistics on vaccinations and deaths among the 65 and older demographic currently say otherwise. The fully vaccinated in that age grouping nationally is only 50%. We need to get that higher. Perhaps it’s a lower percentage in Chicago.

Sorry they did not originally test on older and frail people . What you are seeing right now are Illegal Phase III trials under the EUA. Everyone thing it right now is a guinea pigs for this think, with unknown side effects for medium and long term.
The tests were on healthy people in narrow age range, and it’s a unlicensed Gene Therapy not a vaccine, check the SEC filings by the companies.

Those who are able are steadily leaving the city, bound for northern Indiana, Wisconsin, or at least the outer suburbs. Many taking substantial losses on their downtown condos or neighborhood houses just to get rid of them.

So far, so good, in the US, although fatalities are creeping back up. I'm probably typical: Mid 60's, maybe a touch better than average health (moderate risk) & just got my 2nd Moderna shot yesterday, so, it will be a few more weeks until I have full protection. If the cases really crank up and older people like me get careless, we'll lose more than need be.
OTOH, CDC is still running commercials telling people to stay home! There is no mention of whether one is actually at significant risk of getting seriously ill or worse. It is just a blanket statement. Un-freaking believable. An even larger portion of the populace is going to say "the hell with this"...

Again agreed. What we really do not want is to be like Brazil, where the recent case and fatality numbers are big, going up fast, and worse, even adjusted 2 weeks, the fatalities are rising faster than the cases.
