Well, sort of. Do we know the name of the young woman who Gaetz said was legal? No, we do not. This could all be over very quickly if she gave an on-the-record interview detailing her relationship with Gaetz. She was either 18 or she wasn’t 18.
Even a background interview, where her anonymity is protected but she details the events in question would go a long way towards ending this.
The lawyer’s denial really isn’t material to the question of the propriety of the FBI investigation. If that girl was clearly over the age of consent, any investigation into a US congressman by the FBI needs a thorough explanation by the FBI...unless we’ve simply returned to the days of the Hoover administration.
On the question of THAT FBI investigation, the only relevant element is: Did Gaetz travel with an underage girl without a guardian present? If so, they should interview the girl.
If not, there should be no investigation by the FBI or any other LEO. The fact the FBI pointedly refused comment indicates there is an investigation whether warranted or not.
Because when asked about a supposed investigation, the FBI will always say “no” if it does not exist.
