Ani’s decline began in AD 1064, when a large Seljuk army commanded by Alp Arslan (the second Sultan of the Seljuk Empire) captured the city after twenty-five days of siege and slaughtered many of its inhabitants. Seven years later, in 1071, Alp Aslan would defeat the Romans at Manzikert, sending the Roman Empire into a downward spiral that would end with the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
