When I buy a place the first thing I look for is how to modify it for senior living convenience.

Hubby and I (both crowding 70) did an extensive remodel about 15 yrs ago. Moved our bedroom downstairs. Removed the tub and installed a very large walk in shower with no lip or doors for easy access. Also big bench with handicap bars.

We installed a ramp to the front door. Thinking by spending extra $$$ to be prepared we won’t need it.

That's smart. My wife and I bought into an over-55 condo community a few years back. Even though we are still in our late 50s and I can still easily bound up a few flights of stairs and walk hours at a time, we are ready for the later years without hopefully being a burden on our children.

I really appreciate having simple things like the walk in shower! Should have done that decades ago. It's just nice not having to step over a tub and worry about slipping and falling all the time.

Maybe so but a house equipped like that will do really well on the real estate market when the time comes to sell it.

We have been in our house 25 years. When I was looking at houses to buy Hubby had a definite no for certain things. It was due to his father being in a hospital bed in the living room of my in laws condo because he couldn’t make it up the stairs. Now 25 years later I’m thankful. We have no stairs. We have a walk in shower. The front door is double doors that both can be opened to accommodate a walker or wheelchair. If we need them we can just put some handicap bars in the showers and we’re good.
