WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Earlier today, the South Dakota House of Representatives by an overwhelming vote of 67 -- 2 soundly rejected Governor Noem's "style and form" veto of HB 1217, the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem quickly responded today by again refusing to sign HB 1217, effectively killing the bill. Despite Governor Noem's veto of this bill and refusal to take a strong stand for women's sports, the House's nearly unanimous vote is a strong rebuke of the NCAA and the tentacles of Big Business that pressured Governor Noem to retreat from her earlier support of the bill in the first place.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said:
"The South Dakota House of Representatives today soundly rejected Governor Noem's 'style and form' veto of the Fairness in Women's Sports Act. Governor Noem had another opportunity to sign this bill and stand with the citizens of South Dakota and the legislature. Instead she failed to listen to South Dakotans and is siding with big business, the NCAA, and the rest of the woke mob on the Left.
"Far from standing alone as Governor Noem has suggested, signing HB 1217 would have put South Dakota in the company of Idaho, Mississippi, and Arkansas, which have already enacted similar bills into law, with other states poised to follow.
"Despite Governor Noem's refusal to stand up for common sense, Family Research Council will continue to support efforts in other states pushing back against destructive gender ideologies that threaten our young people, our families, and our freedom," concluded Perkins.
I was paying attention to her from Texas, now as far as I am concerned she is toast. Just another GOPe RINO.
Yep. Paul Ryan in a skirt. Remember when we thought he was conservative? I do.
Noem Nikki Haley-Ed herself.
She didn’t sign onto the bill because it was technically written very poorly and would have been overturned by the courts.
The left would have said “aha the opposite must be constitutional”. That’s how they got gay marriage.
1)Did the left want her to sign the bill? No.
2)When was the last time a Dem didn’t sign a bill because it was “poorly written?” Never.
Noem is no more. I will never trust her again and will never vote for her for anything.
Listen to the interview instead of making asshat cooments. She has a program in place NOW gathering allies, fighting the NCAA. Sheez how dumbed down can it get at FR???
Nothing was explained on Tucker’s show by Noem. It was simply confirmed that at her core she is nothing but a politician. If she wasn’t attractive nobody would pay any attention to her.
This is how the left sneaks into the once secure free states. The left targets and polarizes. They rot the universities, bombard media and infest cities and capitals. It only takes one conservative governor to cave or waiver just a little and that little bit of opening the door leads to opening wide.
What spittle you toss around! She did not veto the bill, she refused to sign it as it was written. BECAUSE she wanted to not bring the leftist NCAA into the fight at this time. She is building a coalition of many states to then take it to the leftist bastards.
I just listened to Dan’s interview with her and yes, she did explain her position well.
Every judge (I forget at which level she said) in her state is a Clinton-appointed judge. All she was asking the legislature to do was insert the changes into the bill that would have made it the same as the TN legislature’s bill, which is receiving much praise.
She IS a fighter, a smart fighter, and is playing the long game to WIN. I like and support her 100%, although not living in her state, I can’t vote for her. She stated she has no national aspirations at all. God Bless her.
Once again, you completely ignore the substance of my post and just prattle on about her (and apparently your) fear of the mighty NCAA, as opposed to the kids actually being affected because boys with mental issues are competing in girl’s sports. The fact is that in her own words, she would accept an affidavit as ‘proof’ of eligibility. That is a complete and total cave.
You’re defending the indefensible here. I suggest you give it up.
They are women hear them whine.
What a well framed LIE! She has not made a Faustian deal ... do you know what that term actually refers to? I am shocked at the deadhead resonses so easily being achieved by the manipulative LYING media! Listen to her own words on the Bongino Show, then look at the actual orgs she is involved in to stop this insane blurring of the sexes through corrosive NCAA meddling. Freerepublic used to have people who did their damned homework before spewing foolish opinions.
Oh yeah, she’s worried about all those high powered NCAA teams in SD.
” She has a program in place NOW gathering allies, fighting the NCAA. Sheez how dumbed down can it get at FR???”
You may want to find another home, if you can’t handle the ‘Conservative Cancel Culture’ on this site (I little Kristi Noem lingo, by the way).
As to this ‘brilliant’ plan of hers to take down the NCAA, all I see is something that didn’t even exist until March 12, which was days AFTER this bill landed on her desk - so to say her heart isn’t in it, would not be off-target.
The bill was on her desk. She cut and run rather than substantively lead on a controversial issue. That’s not leadership. That is craven political calculating. Why is this so difficult to understand?
Oh yeah, she’s worried about all those high powered NCAA teams in SD.
It’s more about the corporations. Banks in particular. She doesn’t want to lead on this issue because woke banks will pull out of SD.
She didn’t veto it, fools. She refused to sign it and sent it back for rewrite to get the NCAA out of the targeting SD the way they did North Carolina. SHE PROTECT girls sports in South Dakota below the college level, but has not abandoned her work to attack the NCAA when the time and strength is right.
You fool! There was a no win situation begging to get South Dakota embroiled in it so the leftists and NCAA could make an example of little South Dakota! Your stupidity regarding leftist tactics is not surprising in the populace, buit it sure is a bad sign at FR of late.
I still support her unless otherwise convinced.
