Dominant overtime helps UCLA secure spot in Elite Eight of NCAA men's basketball tournament

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ten days ago, UCLA went into halftime of its First Four game against Michigan State with an 11-point deficit. The Bruins had ended the regular season with four straight losses and backed into the NCAA tournament, and their trip to Indiana looked to be a short one.

Ten days later, UCLA is 40 minutes from the Final Four.

The Bruins, a No. 11 seed, continued their pseudo-Cinderella run on Sunday night, beating No. 2 seed Alabama in overtime 88-78. They become the second First Four team to advance to the Elite Eight -- and the first since VCU went to the Final Four in 2011. It also guaranteed the Pac-12 will have three teams participating in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2001.

Funniest thing I heard on the radio this morning on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas: they dropped Mark Few's name as potentially the next coach in Austin.

Mark's not going anywhere, Gonzaga's the new place for Burger Boys with aspirations for the NBA.

Does any school develop their players better than Gonzaga?

I think that Coach Few is happy to be at Gonzaga...

They import many of them from Europe, which does a better job on the fundamentals.

Mark Few isn’t going anywhere. He has the best coaching job in college basketball. He could make much more money somewhere else, but he is making plenty now. He hasn’t even interviewed for another job. No one bothers him, the alumni leave him alone, Gonzaga can now go after pretty much any recruit and get a lot of them, they develop players better than any other program, and he gets players into the NBA or professional leagues overseas. Plus, he doesn’t have to put up with knucklehead players.

Most of the media attention is on Kispert, Suggs, and Timme; but Watson, Nimhard, Ayayi, and Strothers will all get a chance to play in the NBA. Ayayi is incredible.

My favorite team is the Gators and whoever is playing the Noles. I hear they’re a basketball school now. LOL.

I haven’t been paying attention to the tournament. So I had to Google the NCAA tournament to be sure that FSU meant Florida State University and not Fresno State University or Frostburg State University.

Sadly though they’ve beaten us like 8 straight years now.

LOL, brings back memories. I went to Frostburg State. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Frostburg mentioned here on Free Republic.

The reason UCLA won was Bama was 11-25 from the FT line.

Frostburg State has a reputation for being a real party school.

I have a colleague who had a tenure-track job there but left before getting tenure because he did not want to be trapped there for the rest of his career.

My apologies for the tardy response...my wife and I went looking for a new refrigerator shortly after I posted.

Joel Ayayi is an incredible young man. After the Virginia game, he told me that he had just graduated from GU with a degree in sports management. We refer to him as our "Swiss Army Knife", because he does so many things well.
