Construction workers rebuilding a bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday unexpectedly found two people living in a cave dug into an embankment, authorities said.
Crews were excavating at the site of the old bridge in Vallejo when they heard voices and switched off their digging equipment, Tom Walker, the project manager for the city, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
They discovered a cave about 20 feet long (6 meters) and 3 feet (0.9 meters) high in the side of the embankment.

When I was a kid, we used to dig such dug outs to play in, where ever the dirt was soft enough. Tunneling back 20 feet was a bit beyond our ambitions/abilities, ‘though. Our parents were always terrified that the tunnels would collapse, trapping us underground; our shoring efforts were rudimentary at best.
I wish the story had pictures.
Born in the Palo Alto Hospital in 1948.
If the Palo Alto Hospital was the old Stanford Hospital, than who knows, maybe we were roommates.

That is a hole, not a cave.
Sounds like the old blue lift bridge with the railroad track down the center.
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
