She used a debit card..
I charge everything on a charge card and pay it off every month.
I saw a video today that told of the danger of using debit cards. Like here, when the money is taken, getting it back is a fight.
A charge card you can dispute charges, I have been notified if a shady charge is happening (usually in real time) and I get cash back (a discount) on everything I buy.
It’s very rare that I use cash.

I couldn’t. Didn’t have a US-based credit card
Since I returned to the US a mere 2 years ago in 2018, my FICO score was zeroed out, with my last US based bank account at Navy Federal Credit Union. Debit card only (plus an AAFES card useful at the O-club on base). Never bothered with a credit card from them.
No US-based credit cards. Had HSBC and Citibank cards. They would not transfer to US accounts - all charges in the US would be international, and they were a pain to pay off as they were Singapore-based cards. So I paid them off and let lapse.
Only cards available to me with a 0 FICO score were $300 prepaid secured credit cards with $10 a month monthly charge and a $80 annual fee that was taken out of the initial deposit. All at 36% APR with immediate interest charges.
So yeah, debit card. So far, Chase was OK.
