It is 79% effective at PREVENTING infection, but 100% at preventing serious illness, hospitalizations and death. That’s what the official explanation is.

What matters most is preventing severe disease which this claims to do 100% of the time. These 79% effective numbers are about preventing infection, particularly among high risk. Your recover rate might be “99+%” overall but the issue is we’re trying to focus on those at risk of getting very sick or dying from covid. Recovery means you didn’t die, it doesn’t mean you aren’t going to have suffered any long term damage.
