How long does the Covid virus last on a surface?

Have a question. Couldn't find reasonable answer. I know, wipe thing down, wear gloves, wear a mask. use hand sanitizers, wash your hands etc. People touch many surfaces daily.i.e., shopping carts gas pumps, doors, clothes etc, etc. How long does Covid virus remain active?

It depends on who you are. If you are an illegal alien, there is no risk of spreading the virus. If you are a churchgoer you won’t be able to gather with more than 5 others for at least another year.

If you are a BLM/Antifa mostly peaceful protester, there are no restrictions. If you are are Trump supporter, gathering with other Trump supporters is an unlawful assembly and insurrection.

I don't think the specific surface matters as much as other environmental factors. Things such as temperature, relative humidity, direct sunlight / UV light. As others have pointed out, even with consideration of these environmental factors there is a difference between virus still being alive vs being viable/transmittable enough to cause an infection. There's also the notion of how much virus are you likely to come in contact with from a given surface, and where is it likely to end up on your person? Virus on your hands, clothes, shoes? So what. Virus in your eyes, nose, mouth, probably not such a good idea. Luckily, with even just a little bit of discipline you can avoid getting any significant exposure.

Personally I don't worry one bit about covid being on a surface. I have long practiced good hygiene. I don't eat or touch my face etc. after touching common surfaces - door handles, hand rails, etc. Heck, I've washed my hands *before* using the bathroom when I'm not sure about the cleanliness of my hands - don't want to touch any ah "sensitive parts" and transmit anything there. A few good personal hygiene habits and there is nothing to worry about. I haven't had a flu shot - ever - and I haven't had the flu in 20 to 25 years. I haven't had a significant cold in years.

Depends on whether or not the person touching the surface is a member of Antifa or BLM.

How long the virus lasts on a surface depends on the surface... four or five hours on copper - days on stainless steel. Humidity affect covid’s survival... The most important thing to remember is NOT to transfer it to your mouth or nose... from any surface. Wash your hands frequently...

Still Disinfecting Surfaces? It Might Not Be Worth It

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/12/28/948936133/still-disinfecting-surfaces-it-might-not-be-worth-it

“But the risk of getting infected from touching a surface contaminated by the virus is low, says Emanuel Goldman, a microbiologist at Rutgers University.

“In hospitals, surfaces have been tested near COVID-19 patients, and no infectious virus can be identified,” Goldman says.

What’s found is viral RNA, which is like “the corpse of the virus,” he says. That’s what’s left over after the virus dies.

“They don’t find infectious virus, and that’s because the virus is very fragile in the environment — it decays very quickly,” Goldman says.”

Wash your hands. YES! But in California many, if not MOST, fast food Restaurants have closed their restrooms, so you can’t wash your hands or do other business. OUCH!!

I agree with your response of good hygiene.

I always use a hand wash after touching menus (the dirtiest part of a restaurant), rails on a cruise, doorknobs anywhere, and bathrooms.

Traveled the world and never had any norovirus. Due to being aware of public surfaces.

My family sometimes calls me paranoid...I say I’m cautious. I stay healthy👍😳

Maybe you can’t wash your hands; however, baby wipes in a baggie with rubbing alcohol will solve the problem,.

Don’t use hand sanitizers. That’s tge worst thing you can do. They are incredibly unhealthy.

Early on, there was some study that said it was still on something 17 days later, but apparently most people don’t believe it.

Agreed. In my youth I was a lot more reckless... let’s call it carefree or unconcerned about such things. My wife OTOH has always been a self proclaimed germophobe. So when we had kids, I adopted a lot of better practices in the name of domestic tranquility. But my younger days no-doubt helped train/strengthen my immune system. Of course I did have say with the kids. You have to let kids be kids. They play, they fall down, they get hurt, they get sick, and they recover. Funny to note that all my kids have been exposed to people who have tested positive for covid. Yet they have been tested multiple times and come up negative. Imagine that.

If you’re over 70 and are fearful (hence your question), then you should just wrap yourself in a condom and stay isolated.

Me? I’m 54, in good health, had a 72 hour ‘flu’ from this virus and happily immune.

The other 90% of the population shouldn’t care a lick, but now they want to vaccinate 6 month infants against this virus.

The answer to your question, however, is academic:

It doesn’t matter.

From what I understand, it’s extremely rare to contract covid by touch. The tests I’ve heard of used full viral loads in ideal conditions to cause contagion, not really anything you’d run into in day to day life.

I’d say, if you are concerned, tho - just do a lot of heavy-lathered handwashing (the lather - along with the hot water - is what breaks down the virus) when you can. I also will sometimes spray a bit of bleach on the hands, rub it in and wash it off, if I’m feeling a bit more paranoid about having handled something or other.

But again, touch isn’t the usual means of transmission, breathing in the virus is the main way to become infected.

I agree with you.

I grew up with up with a father that stated, “ God made dirt, and dirt won’t hurt,” His other statement after anything falling on the ground, “3 seconds won’t hurt.”

We grew up on a farm. My husband did as well. We need to challenge our immune system so that we can survive the “hits”. I’m thankful that God gave us an immune system.

If it is never challenged, we cannot defend.

Herr is how ridiculously contrived this whole thing is.

https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2017/04/new-cdc-guidelines-flu-pandemic-measures-reflect-2009-lessons

The new guidance includes the following information about the CDC’s likely advice on the use of specific NPIs in a pandemic:

The CDC may recommend voluntary home quarantine for exposed household members of flu patients for up to 3 days.
The agency may recommend use of face masks as a “source control measure” for flu patients in crowded or close-contact settings during severe or extreme pandemics.
Well persons will not be advised to use face masks except in a few scenarios, such as pregnant women or other vulnerable people in crowded settings or people caring for patients at home.
The CDC may recommend preemptive school closures in severe or extreme pandemics, but in moderate pandemics the decision will be left to local authorities.
The agency may recommend social distancing steps (for example, that people keep at least 3 feet away from each other) during severe or extreme pandemics.
Environmental cleaning is recommended in all settings to eliminate flu viruses on frequently touched surfaces.

They made all this crap up as time went on...

And they are reverting to their original theories and recommendations

“According to Dr. Fasci, the Covid-19 virus has a half-life measured in decades.”

...and sterilization with 10 MeV X-rays only makes it mad.

And I’m the exact opposite. I wear a mask, wore gloves for the first couple of weeks when it sounded like we were dealing with something on the level of ebola, haven’t wiped down a thing that comes in the house, don’t carry/use wipes, wash my hands no more than before and touch my face frequently.

Not suggesting anyone do so nor giving advice.
