PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood hospitalized with a fractured leg.
Port Orange police said early Friday that Paige Bergman was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving serious bodily injury,
She was arrested after police said they found the vehicle that struck Chitwood, who was riding a bike, at a home in the 3200 block of Sardinia Terrace in Deltona.
Volusia County sheriff’s officials said in a tweet Thursday afternoon that Chitwood was taken to a hospital after the crash, which took place around 4:30 p.m. at Town West Boulevard and Daylily Street in Port Orange.
Chitwood needed stitches and suffered a fractured fibular, he said via his Facebook page.
The sheriff later released a statement on Twitter.
(WARNING: video below has strong language)
Chitwood said he was on a 20-mile bike ride when he was hit from behind.
“I go flying off the bike and what I could tell you it was a burgundy color car because the mirror was impaled in my back,” he said.
Chitwood said a driver of a waste truck saw the incident, and the collision was caught on video.
Chitwood posted video of the crash Friday morning, saying, “Thank you all again for your messages and kind words. I have some road rash, a few stitches on the gash from the passenger side mirror and a fractured fibula that the doctors hope will heal on its own. I consider myself lucky to be back on my feet today.”(snip)
“Please let this be a warning to put your phones down while you’re driving before you kill someone,” Chitwood said via Facebook.

Another account of this story I found said that when deputies went to Bergman's home, she claimed she hit a mailbox. They said to her parents, 'Do you want to know what she hit? Mike Chitwood, the sheriff.'
FR jury needs more pics to determine guilt status...
I watched a guy hit a mailbox and drive off in a well marked company truck.
I called the company and asked to speak with the driver. It was a brand new truck so he was easy to find.
He claimed he didn’t hit any mailbox until I asked him what it was that bounced off his windshield.
I gave him the address and told him he had 24 hours to fix it or I was going to give the homeowner his name and number so they could press charges. It got replaced that day.
That said, I wonder what’s gonna happen when this chick finds out she can’t internet shop from jail.
Anyone who is shopping on their phone while driving has to have a few screws loose.
She is also facing charges in a December Domestic Battery case.
LOL! To hit anyone is bad enough but to hit the Sheriff of the county - you may as well play the lottery that same day.
A few years ago, a driver hit me while biking and after he saw me being hit. He told me after he called 911, that he didn't see me. Im 6'4" with red hair, wearing a safety orange vest and lights on my bike. I told the moron if he was drunk. He was backing out of his driveway...
She is guilty. I hope the judge sentences her to the maximum prison time and revokes her driver’s license for 10 years. Anyone stupid enough to shop while driving should not have a driver’s license. The prison time will wean her from her cell phone.
I am surprised to find neither Mike Chitwood Sr. or Jr have Wiki pages. I was looking for more background on Jr. as I think this is the second accident he has been injured in.
Domestic battery and no bail.
Lovely message that sent.
She kinda looks like Veruca Salt.
Who, when I was a kid, was kinda hot
Good band, I liked that song “Seether”
Florida (Law) Man ping...
Glad he’s OK. Coulda been a lot worse.
So I note that the word 'accident', which is what the Bicycling Magazine article takes issue with, appears no where in this description. As the victim of my own 2 year ongoing recovery from being hit on my bike while legally (FL Law) riding on a sidewalk, I too have encountered that 'accident' word from descriptions and narratives! I would imagine that having the local Sheriff as the victim would tend to discipline the writing!
Best wishes to him, Sheriff Mike Chitwood, AND, in truth, to this young lady! At age 20, she committed a stupid and life-changing act. May she, please G-d, learn from it!
There’s a nice bike path visible in the video. When I rode my bike around town (before getting run down in a controlled crosswalk) I used bike paths and sidewalks to stay away from motor vehicles as much as possible. Apparently the Sheriff was riding on the side of the road with the flow of traffic. I’ll assume he knows the rules and follows recommended procedures, but it seems he keeps getting hit by cars and pick-ups.
Too many bicyclists arrogantly insist on riding on the road in close proximity to moving traffic. While they may have a legal right to ride on the side of the road, it’s just plain stupid, especially if there’s a bike path or sidewalk available. There’s an unwritten imperative in boating that overrides all rules of the road and offers sound guidance for bicycles too: the biggest boat has the right of way. Stay clear!
As for little Miss ‘hit and run’ about 5 years in the clink and 10 more without driving ought to be enough time to adjust her attitude.
But she didn’t hit the deputy, right? :P
That was bad ...
Strange that a wiki is not about him but this is hilarious:

What’s occurring right now in DC is not democracy. It’s un-American. It is not free speech - quite frankly it’s pure thuggery. This is an attempt to highjack the values and ideals that have made this country the greatest in the world.
The Trump curse strikes again.
