The boy's mother remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while both dogs have been euthanized, officials said
A 3-year-old boy was attacked and killed, and a mother badly injured, by two dogs in their New Jersey neighborhood, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.
The attack in Carteret occurred in the backyard of a home around 4:30 p.m., according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and town police chief Dennis McFadden. First responders quickly arrived at the scene and airlifted the young boy to the hospital.
The child died at the hospital. The mother, who was said to have suffered severe injuries, remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, officials said.
Neighbors described how the horrific scene played out, as the child was playing in the yard when two dogs attacked. The canines live on the opposite side of the victims' backyard, and somehow got past a fence before going after the boy and his mother.
One man said he could hear the mother's cries for help, but no one was there. Neighbors said the family had recently moved to Carteret from New York City.
No one answered the door of the home where the dogs were said to live. Those who knew the owners said the dogs never seemed aggressive before, and didn't seem to cause too much commotion.
It was unclear if the owners were facing charges. Town officials said municipal records show the dogs were not registered with Cartaret, which is required by law. The local police chief later confirmed both dogs had been euthanized.
"As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor and we pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief," Cartaret Mayor Daniel Reiman said Wednesday.
A joint investigation involving the Carteret Police Department and Middlesex County prosecutor's office remains underway. Anyone with information can contact those offices at 732-541-4181 and 732-745-3300, respectively.\
“you die in your trailer alone ....your Yorkie will stay alive eating you”
I should make up a good permanent sign for that contingency.
“Please find my dogs a good home. They were only being true to their nature” or some such thing.
I’d never want them punished just for trying to survive my death.
If they were girls they be good here on my ten acres....although you’re going to outlive me
Mature male Rotts don’t do other males well unless raised from birth
There is no one I’d want to have him, more than you.
Alas, male Dobes are not fond of other male dogs, either.
You’re right
Big guard type males are territorial ....it’s just what they are
Females too sometimes don’t like each other ....
I’ve had male with female and if she’s fixed it’s easier....if not then twice a year it’s Moon River
I’ve seen a male Rott submit a female but never attack one
My female American bulldog would try to kill any female animal except human or livestock
No, we were visiting from out of state. They didn't have kids and could just put the dog outside when kids visited. I never saw the dog after that incident. Apparently, the dog never acted aggressively again. It was only my daughter who somehow flipped the switch. If not for that incident, no one would have seen the potential disaster hiding somewhere in that "sweet" dog's brain. Owners who think their pit would never hurt someone are in denial.
Hrafn’s half sister, Seven, does not like dogs of any sex.
She lives with Himself in the other half of the house, just to keep things peaceful.
Hrafn would love to play with her but she’s funny.
Romping can turn into a rumble in an eye’s blink, if she thinks the other dog looked at her funny.
She’ll be 8 on the 28th so we just let her be an Only Child to hubby.
It's my general observation that most of the people who own vicious pit bulls tend to not have two nickels to rub together (of legally reported income, anyways).
Absolutely agree I know exactly who owns this breed of dog I see it in CA. everywhere!!
Kill them all, every last one of them

I agree as there is no reason to have this type of dog for any reason in our society and especially with children or small adult humans in the dogs’ space. Absolutely no reason.
He doesn't look lab to me. Look at his foreleg structure, and compare it to the other dog-- almost identical. Too small to have a lot of lab genes.
This is so tragic. No one can say "no" any more or use common sense. Some pits are sweet to their food-providing owners, but they are a danger to every other living thing.
The dogs were just trying to turn their lives around.
Seriously, when I lived in a mafia-run town, the neighbors all said the same thing about those grisly extortionist/murderers. "Oh, he was such a good neighbor. Gave money to the church..."
As another bite survivor, I’m wondering if you have tried any of the spray dog repellents on your sleeves, hands, pant legs, shoes and socks when you go out.
Most of the owners whose dogs are viscious are crazy, immoral or have chosen the dog to express their inner rage at the rest of humanity.
Thank You. I’m so tired of that talking point.
