A massive “street takeover” in the Granada Hills neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley led to 11 arrests and several injuries, including two officers who were hurt while trying to break up the crowd, authorities said.
Video of the Saturday night incident shows cars screeching and spewing exhaust as they drive in tight circles, or “doughnuts,” at San Fernando Mission and Balboa boulevards.
21 vehicles were impounded and 25 citations were issued...
So-called street takeovers or sideshows involve street racers or members of car clubs taking over a stretch of road or an intersection to perform burnouts, doughnuts and other dangerous driving stunts.
Officers across multiple agencies say the events are a serious problem throughout Southern California...
In October, a pickup flipped during a raucous takeover event in Costa Mesa, killing a 23- year-old passenger.
Prior to that fatal crash, an 18-year-old woman was struck by a reversing car and flipped into the air during a similar event in Anaheim.

Very briefly on NYC there was a problem like it’s involving motorcycles. IIRC there was a story wherein they terrorized a family involving very young children, that was posted on here. The cop response was to seize thw bikes and dump them en mass into the street and run them over with steamrollers. Problem solved. A real rarity in NYC.
A lot of it is programming, too.
My VW TDI has a Malone Stage 2 upgrade that makes it essentially an Audi TT, picked up 48 horspower and a bunch of torque; it also gets better mileage. IIRC a lot of Fords and Chevys are also electronically limited, easy peasy to change that stuff and you can have various presets such as ‘pass smog’, ‘super econo’, and ‘valet’ (limits it to 25 mph or such). There’s still a lot of hot-rodding going on but it’s no so much about boring out and blueprinting the motor these days. I think it’s some Accuras in particular that can make way over 300 hp with just a bit of tweaking.
An Accura hot rod? Ya know, even if one of those things could do 195mph, I’m just not impressed by vehicles that look like what everyone else drives. Every other driveway has one parked in it.
Hot rods of the 60s was whole other story, especially in venues like CA. They were were thing of beauty and tons of hard work building them. They turned heads a on every street. To me an Accura doesn’t even rate a second look.

Nah, I grew up in "lowrider culture" and lowriders don't race or do donuts. Their cars are customized too low for that. Mostly they block traffic by driving too slow while showing off their rides.
These are probably hot rod clubs getting in a little power racing and peeling out.
Leave them alone. They aren't attacking people, tearing down statues or burning buildings.
These are cars from an era where men designed cars to satisfy their dreams, to fulfill ambitions that went far beyond money. These cars represent the dying glimmer of an era when human beings aspired to more than merely belonging to the hive, and plugging into the hive mind. The sixties was a decade of dreams, and these cars epitomized those dreams.

Everything is different. I recall when auto parts stores did not hire young women who didn’t have a clue. They were all guys and nearly every single one knew car parts and engines inside out. I went to an O’Reillyzone auto parts recently and asked the young female there where the compression washers were, she looked at me with far away eyes and said, “What’s that?” I politely said, never mind, and left.
The only national brand parts stores with anybody who has a clue is NAPA. And you pay for the expertise in higher prices, which is OK.
The rest of them don’t pay enough to keep anybody who is really knowledgeable.

I’m no pro mechanic, but I’ve reached a point where I’ve
even fabricated my own parts when possible. I’m currently rebuilding a 54 year old motorcycle. It’s actually a lot of fun when I take my time. I’m 5 months into.
Not sure I approve of them destroying property. Fine them. If they can’t pay the fine, impound the property and sell it. Destroying them seems a waste.

They are like all modern performance cars to me. Little style and no soul. Can’t make them uniquely yours. About all you can do is hang cheap crap on them and pretend you really did something. Just not the same as work you could actually take pride in doing and showing off your knowledge and skill.

In the distance past I’ve walked into a parts store and asked for some off the wall part that no one should even know the name of and been told just a second and very shortly had the part in my hand. Seldom happens anymore.
Imprison the criminals and confiscate their vehicles. Permanently. No difference from blm a—holes who block traffic.
Those are the thingies you use to wash compressors.
But seriously, the women who work in the local parts stores do a fine job. Many people expect car parts workers to be as knowledgeable as mechanics. Not gonna happen. Mechanics make much more money than parts counter workers, and that should put some perspective on the levels at which things are.
