Someone just asked me if I was being sarcastic when I wrote, "The horror...the horror..." Nope. Apparently that phrase is often used in comedy (I don't get out much).
When I wrote it. I was trying to conceptualize the ordeal a child would facing watching anyone kill someone (e.g., brain matter etc.), let alone their own father. I actually can't conceive of witnessing something like that as an adult. A child would, I think, file that away in horrified trauma and perhaps live in fear father would do THAT to them when they misbehave. Some children face terror and evil beyond description (murder, child trafficking) and I'm amazed if they can get through it at all.
