Well, historically speaking, mothers-in-law can be a challenge in any culture. But I was just floored by the stories my Korean co-worker was telling me about her mother telling her she hoped she had a miscarriage if she ever got pregnant, and that they intended to do their best to break up the marriage before children were born. (And they were successful, too.) Another interesting aspect was that the guy she married came from a famous American literary family. You would know the name if I told you. Anyone in America would have been thrilled to add that family to their lineage. Her parents were not impressed because he was still white.
I’m glad to hear your MIL eventually softened up a bit.
