Gonzaga named overall No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament for first time

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga Bulldogs were named the overall No. 1-seed for the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday.

The Zags received the top seed in the tournament after completing a perfect regular season and winning the West Coast Conference tournament. The Bulldogs will head into the tournament with a 26-0 record, just the 20th undefeated team ever. This is the first time the Bulldogs have received the No. 1 overall seed.

The Zags will face the winner of Norfolk State and Appalachian State on Saturday, March 20. The time and channel have not been announced. The entirety of the tournament is taking place in Indiana this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NCAA has said teams other than the four 1-seeds will be seeded based on rankings and without geographical considerations.

Senior Corey Kispert has led the Bulldogs in scoring this year with 19.2 points per game, with sophomore Drew Timme leading the team in rebounds with 7.1 per game.

Gonzaga set the record for most double-digits wins this season as the Associated Press top-ranked team with 23. This was one of many records set by the Zags this year as they try for the school's first men's basketball national title.

While fans can attend tournament games this year, each venue other than the one in Bloomington, Indiana, can only operate at 25% capacity, and players, coaches and staff can have up to six family members attend games. The NCAA is allocating a total of 350 tickets to Gonzaga and other schools for the opening rounds of the tournament.

Other number one seeds are Michigan, Baylor, and Illinois...

USC is in...UCLA has to beat Michigan State to get in...

Good luck to Gonzaga...It is a good team...It is undefeated...

I think it is very hard to have an undefeated season in men's college basketball...

I will enter a tournament contest...I will pick Gonzaga as the winner in the tournament...

Strangest brackets ever this year. No Kentucky and no Duke. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Good luck to the Zags but I don't see them winning it all. They haven't faced many really tough teams this year. I think Kansas and Iowa were their toughest.

When they come up against a strong defensive team, they may be in trouble. We shall see.

My opinion; Gonzaga will lose in the third or fourth round. They never get as far as people think they will.

Gonzaga is very good, but somewhat untested. Most teams in their conference are essentially Div II programs. It will be interesting to see how they fare

Gonzaga vs. somebody from the Big Ten in the final (although it’s been a long time since Gonzaga played somebody good, so they may have forgotten how to do it).

Why would any red blooded American waste their time supporting these communist propaganda machines we call universities?

West Coast Conference...Indeed, many teams are not very good in that conference...I do think that BYU is a decent team...

Iowa, Virginia, West Virginia,Kansas, and Auburn...the Baylor game was cancelled due to the hoax....

I think that's a pretty good smattering of teams from various conferences...

BYU is no slouch either....

Don't bother them with the facts. The only team the Zags haven't beaten by double digits this year is West Virginia, whom they beat by 5.

Kansas 12, Iowa 11, Virginia 23 (and Few cleared the bench with 4 minutes to go), first team ever to beat 4 Top 25 teams in their first seven games.

I like our chances, to put it mildly.

And this notion they underperform is ridiculous. The last time the Zags lost their first round game was 2008 to Davidson/Steph Curry. They hold the longest current streak for making the Sweet Sixteen at 5.

Of the last six players to make both First Team AA and First Team Academic AA, 3 are Zags: Dan Dickau, Kelly Olynyk, and Nigel Williams-Goss. Corey Kispert has a great shot to accomplish that this year. The Zags consistently max the Academic Performance Ratings, too.

The Zags play the most unselfish style of basketball I have ever seen, it's beautiful.

There's a major difference to the Zags this year, thanks to Jalen Suggs and Andrew Nembhard. Jalen was an all-state quarterback in high school, while Andrew started every game for the Florida Gators his first two years. He transferred to Gonzaga to improve his development as a player. Those two young men have upped the physicality of this team, and it's rubbed off on the entire team.

You can make the same statement every year for the 67 teams that don’t win the title.

Defending National Champion Virginia went 0-2 against the WCC. USF beat them in addition to the nationally televised thrashing by Gonzaga.
