So completely ridiculous, like somehow naming them interrupts their “wild nature”. I and thousands of others have watched the pair of eagles in Hanover, PA. nest for many years. We have watched from mating, eggs hatching to fledging. Every year the watchers give the new babies names, the Adult pair are Freedom and Liberty. THIS year the PA Game Commission has issued a directive prohibiting this group from naming them. Looks like the cancel culture has a new target.
“ THE naming of the hatchlings and their offspring introduces an element of domestication. In order to respect the eagles wild nature we ask that you refrain from naming the hatchlings. We've consulted with our partners, the Pennsylvania Game Commission on how to distinguish these hatchlings and decided to refer to the first hatchling as H313 (Hanover+March 13th) and the second hatchling will be referred to with a similar naming convention. We appreciate your understanding and sharing in this amazing experience with us!
How about Dweezil and Moon Unit?
I’m sure the eagle fledglings are NOT insulted by people wanting to give them decent names.
I would love the eagle watchers and other bird/nature lovers to sign a statewide petition against the Pa Game Commission’s actions and stupid asswipe letter for not letting people exercise their free speech.
Let’s shame these putzs, name by name, position by position. Put them up on billboards and since there parasites are on the taxpayer dole, they can’t do a damned thing about it. Their salaries are in the public domain as are their titles.
Hit them back like a flock of angry American Eagles would do to protect their chicks.
Glen Frey and Don Henley would approve of this tactic.
Our slogan: “Talons out”!!!
UPDATE: Evidently there was quite a bit of pushback from the directive prohibiting eagle watchers from naming the baby eaglets. They have now released the following:
Hello Viewers! We want you to know we hear you regarding naming of the Hanover eaglet. We kindly ask you continue to remain courteous and understand that viewing this nest is a privilege. This live cam provides a unique opportunity to witness and learn about the lives of bald eagles, which is incredible. While one could argue naming helps form connections with wildlife; biologists, ecology experts and species researchers are not keen on naming for the protection of the animal and the integrity of their wild nature. While the opposing argument could be made that naming can help the public connect with wildlife in a way that generates advocacy and care, we’d like to air on the side of protecting the wild nature of the eagles, so that these live cams can continue for years to come. If a name is decided on among the members in this community with significance, we will not ban or prevent community members from referring to the eaglet in this manner, however we will continue to refer to the eaglet with the naming convention in alliance with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. These live cameras would not be possible without partnership with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. We respect our partnership with PGC and we ask that you do the same. At the end of the day, regardless of naming, let’s remember why we’re all here. We are all united for the same common purpose to learn, admire and protect the bald eagle species. Thank you for viewing!
